This course traces the ideas that have shaped western thought from Greece to modern times. The western way of thinking which, because of its political and economic success, now predominates over other world cultures, derives from a slow and often contradictory evolution of concepts in ethics, politics, logic and religious philosophy. Some of these ideas have been so engrained in our way of thinking that their validity goes unchallenged. In some historic instances, these unchallenged ideas have improved our lives, in others they have been disastrous to millions.
